Concept

A skirt about freedom

This skirt was created on commission for Museum Rotterdam as part of a tactile and visual experience for the war museum collection.

Inspired by Dutch Liberation Skirts, I used recycled fabric scraps, felted materials, and embroidery to create a piece about freedom, remembrance, and connection. The triangle symbolizes strength and liberation, while “Long Live Freedom,” “5 May 1945,” and my grandmother’s name, Emma, add personal and historical meaning.

Made to be touched

Every patch feels different

The skirt had to work for every visitor, also for people who are blind. So every patch has its own texture: smooth cotton, rough felt, raised embroidery, soft lace. You can read the skirt with your hands.
